Seriously spot on appraisal of twitter. Now the real question is, how do we all find a way to get paid to have a meaningful existence in front of a computer that doesn’t require us to look for validation from others?
You make some fine points but the beauty of Twitter is you can shape it to serve any need you may have - boredom, entertainment, information, marketing, whatever. And you turn off the darn thing any time you want.
Frequent, but inconsistent and somewhat unpredictable reward, which produces a momentary high. If we could do live PET brain scans on heavy Twitter users I guarantee it would look exactly like hitting an opiate all day, clinically.
I’ll even go as far as to say the frequent outages (as long as it comes back each time) actually reinforce this feedback mechanism and dig users in a little deeper each time.
I jumped out of my chair when he said ” Loren Feldman, 1938Media.. But to stay on topic.. Far from bored.. ecspecially @ Mahalo Labs..Wait!!! Does Jason Own iT??

In every joke there’s a grain of truth so even if Loren isn’t being funny here on purpose (and it is funny), he does point out what some of us don’t want to accept.
A-FUCKING-MEN. I can appreciate that view on things as someone who also feels alot of ’success’ relates to psychological triggers/habits/whatnotandwhathaveyou. Very good insight.
We put up with it because it just doesn’t matter. Twitter is nice. If it went away tomorrow WHO CARES. If it’s down, WHO CARES. All I would miss is one of Dave Winers driveling little posts.
I think Twitter just adds to the suffocating boredom that people are feeling. It just piles it on even deeper.
But its okay for some things.
like all of the Obama/political tweets. I don’t get how it fuels so many people’s passion. I can’t relate to it at all. It just makes me feel sad. I don’t believe it is real, but most would disagree saying its the most real thing there is in life.

ReplyHow would you compare Twitter to the catch-all OT area on a large community forum?
ReplyMotivational. I like it.
ReplyYou just realized that? we like twitter because we’re bored and it provides some random and meaningless distraction? that’s kind of obvious
I’m always using the web to get an instant reward, like instant lottery. For me, twitter is the fastest fix.

ReplyIt’d have been a lot more ironic if you’d said that with the Scoble puppet

ReplyTwitter sucks.
Replylol bored with life? if only we all had your life of sucking valleymen’s cocks.
ReplyTwitter has proven itself to be nothing more than a toy for me. Whenever I do post a serious query, I get nothing back.
“Wisdom in crowds”. A dumber thing was never said.
Blow me.
ReplyLoren is cooler than you all. Bow down.

Replylots of vitriol on this board, you all need more cardio
Reply@nick beam - I agree, we’re all some hateful bastards, with not much else to do. But Loren likes us that way.
ReplyInteresting video. I don’t get a lot of comments yet, but haven’t resorted to Twitter.
ReplyComments don’t mean shit. Just do your thing and don’t worry about it. That’s what I do.
ReplyI use Twitter to share things with other, feelings opinions and links… feedback is important, but Twitter will never replace our blogs.
ReplyYou are so right.

ReplyActually, I tolerate Twitter because every time you Tweet about Julia Allison, my cell phone vibrates in my pocket.
