Gotta disagree with you on Microsoft — they’re a long way from dead. I think this perception of them is because they keep trying to branch out in wacky directions. Their mp3 player will never be successful. I don’t know if they’ll manage to do any kind of popular set-top box either, but you can be sure that’s coming.
They’ll keep selling PC software, and keep making billions of dollars off that, count on it. Nobody else can touch their R&D budget. They’re also going head to head with Oracle for the mid-range database market. I think that’s what the whole Novell move is about, but nobody really knows for sure.
I think you’re right about one thing: it’s not an exciting company anymore. Microsoft in the 2000s is like IBM in the 1980s. They’re not going away, and they’re going to be huge no matter what, but they days of people camping outside stores to get a new OS release are done.
Oddly, Apple does seem to get people excited in that way, even though if you go back and study the history of the company, they’re just as sleazy as anybody else, and they’re put out their share of complete crap. And continue to. iTunes? Total garbage. Worst goddamn software I’ve used in years. Yet nobody can touch the ipod. It’s all about the image. Apple’s got it, Microsoft doesn’t.
Is a popular view going aroud at the moment and one that is true in some aspects of the business and not in others.
For instance in the developer area microsoftware continues to release better and exciting development tool.
With Office and so forth are still basically the same product as 5 years ago.
That’s ok though because I dont want to learn another email client or document processing application.
And to say that “Apple has it” What a crock! Just because of the IPod…please give me a break
I’ll jump on the bandwagon and say I don’t think Microsoft is dead. I think it will be interesting to see what they do in the next 5 years to compete with Google. But they ain’t dead.
Speaking of big heads, Scoble is the the guy with a big head. He thinks he’s much more important than he actually is. So important that people care about his vacation and what he eats?
Some people are attractive enough that they should post their pictures all over the internet. Scoble, his wife, and Chris Pirillo are not those people.
@ Loren: hilarious vid, I really laughed when you went: ‘whatever, he’s a nut’.
@ Big Roy: reg. Scoble, the guy post his vacation plans because he likes to think he travels with an entourage. Calanacis is much worse though (if that’s possible).
OK, you don’t like my ipod example? How about the prevalence of Macs in video editing? It’s not that Macs have faster processors, or anything else; it’s that Apple makes better video editing software. Have you ever tried using Windows Movie Maker? Awful. Everything else I’ve tried on Windows has been nearly as bad.
PC’s and Microsoft will continue to rule the office (I should know, I work with this crap all day long), but Apple is what gets consumers excited.

Quote “Microsoft is dead”
Loren, all you are doing by making statements like this is showing your ignorance. Windows OS is in every office on the world…come one
Also the value of your opinion in rapidly declining as a result of such silly remarks.
Every time I hear you make a statement like this, I will be less likely to listen to what you have to say next time.
Although I liked the Winer/Weaner joke
