Steven P. is really starting to annoy me. Granted Scoble is a half-wit but to punish us all is bullshit in my opinion.

It’s seems suborn not to “turn on” video, what with almost every other smart phone having it. But are Apple really about content creation?
They’re about post-production and consumption.
Let Nikon, Canon, RED etc. produce the devices for content pdtn. I don’t think video on a 2MP camera would be very “Apple”, either.
I’m pretty sure some features are being held back. Releasing a “all-in” superfone wouldn’t leave much room for future upgrades, would it?
Jobs has everyone eating out of his hand. Why would he dump everything we want at our feet? Better to keep us pecking hopefully.
ReplyHey Loren, when are you going to put video comments on your site … afraid of the competition dude?
Replysuckingeggs - Hey dope, competition would be you getting your own site and doing videos there and then getting people to watch them there.
Replyits so true. its 2008 and apple has NO VIDEO on the goddamn iPhone. It blows my fucking mind that it has come this far. who cares about games people!
i wanted to throw up all over my macbook yesterday when they started covering games and then Jobs walks off stage w/ no mention of video.
its sickening. just like scoble on a beach, its disgusting.
Replyyeah, thought so
Replydon’t know how you held back that smile there Bro?
Replynext upgrade must be camera, 2 meg sucks
Imagine 5 meg and QIK on iPhone
game set and match
I believe its a network issue, imagine 10%- a million users using QIK or any video platform, 100 million megs a day for 2-3 videos, would destroy the network
well,that’s my thoughts anyways
Loren… sorry for the stupid question/clarification… were you serious about the thing that there is no video on the iPhone cause of Scoble?
ReplyIf Yes I have to say that I can fully understand Steve Jobs…
I have 5MP and QIK on my N95 8GB.
Can’t say the lack of video and a decent camera will stop me from getting an iPhone (I have held back prior to now, because of the price and UK network - but maybe the new price will mean I’ll suffer O2).
The iPhone’s OSX and the SDK are what makes it the device to have.
ReplyPat,
Qik is a non entity in this issue, Apple will build it’s own qik for it. It’s just him being a hard ass. This should have been fixed a long time ago.
Replysuckingeggs - yeah it would be to hard for you to build your own audience on your own site huh? No one here gives a shit about your thoughts or videos. They come here to see me, not some moron video commenter.
ReplyFuckit dude, put some clothes on, wouldya?
Replylol!
since the 50s humans have thought they were on the verge of entering the technological futureworld prophecized by Walt Disney. the result was some truly ridiculous gadgetry that seems bizarre and hilarious in retrospect and only served to insulate the human condition and distance us mentally from the terror of our pink monkey suits.
Replythe iphone, web 2.0, twitter, this is all just the rickety first test run of Virtual Reality. none of it REALLY matters but look how worked up we still get over the idea that we are on the cusp of plunging into the world of Philip K. Dick. In 50 years things will look very similar.
too f%$#ing right. But iChat was all video… how grain of sand size is iChat. Nobody uses it. He is just messing with our heads. By the way, who want’s a friend locator. I owe all my friends big money. If they see me withing 10 miles of them they’ll kick my head in. At least some of those losers don’t have an iPhone so they wont see me. Kind of reminds me of iChat!
Replywanna know why there really is no video. The iPhone is too slow for it… but he doesn’t show those stats does he. And Steve… next keynote, fllow Lorens example and strip from the waist up (you did have your pants on, right?)
ReplyThats bullshit Don, they could do it right now if they wanted, he’s just being a pain in the ass, cause he can. Christ I love him.
Replytried the iphone out 2 weeks ago in London. Slow as hell and that was just browsing while in the Apple store. Get an N95, it’s not a beauty. it is a beast.
ReplyIt may not be elegant. It certainly isn’t up to the “Apple Standard”, but a bunch of companies are doing video apps for jailbroken phones. Loren, why don’t you think some company has a killer video app ready to go for the app store?
ReplyIf he thought video was important at this juncture, he have turned it on.
…And, I seriously doubt you had your pants on.
ReplyIt’s not as strange Jobs would do that as it is that he TOLD you he did.
@ “And, I seriously doubt… ” No, pants? You’re pretty sharp, Golf Girl.:-)
Reply@Robert - It doesnt matter if Apple wont enable the camera for them.
@golfgirl - Correct.
ReplyThat video would be even better if you were punching big beef carcasses or shooting cats from your window
ReplyLoren,
Great post, love it. It was hard to keep a straight face with the scoble comment wasn’t it.

ReplyDon Crowley,
iPhone can’t handle video???
But it can handle a super-sweeeet build of 3D Super Monkey Ball, no?
Don’t be daft.
ReplyDon, See what I mean?
ReplyJobs is interested in content sales and players.
And, design being a big deal for the iPhone, it just won’t be able to ever really compare to something such as the Nokia N93i, http://tinyurl.com/6jwn9r , in the video world. Nor should they even try. Jobs sees the iPhone as an extension of the iPod- a player for content that happens to be a phone. They make pretty obvious choices- sleek design over additional features (like a decent lens.) and great interface over additional features.
An iPhone sized gadget with the expected interface, a big enough storage medium for video, a great lens and support for it, within the lines of the design is some years off methinks.
ReplyI agree. Quit smoking on camera. I quit and I miss it. It sucks to see the pure enjoyment of nicotine bliss in your eyes.
Replyi’m sad loren you won’t be able to deliver such videos at C|NET anymore. I mean, come on, insulting (even for fun) major advertisers, will probably be out of the question there. I hope you keep 1938 live.
ReplyThe new 3G Iphone has about 7 hours of video playback capability (source: CNet’s CRAVE review @ http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9963937-1.html)
To NOT enable video playback on the device, given ITunes, would have been REALLY DUMB.
Now if you are talking about the ability to record video via it’s 2MP camera, that’s a different matter, but it would seem to me that it should do it.
ReplyHmm.. okay I stand corrected. The phone can’t record video. NOW THAT IS REALLY DUMB!
ReplyThe current cameras in macbooks are 1.3 mp. The camera on the phone is more than ample, hes just being difficult.
ReplyResolution reminder: HD video (1920×1080) is 2 megapixels. There’s other stuff at play here.
Someone will likely write a 3rd party video app. The video will probably look like shit.
Real video support likely comes next rev.
ReplyPam I will continue at 1938 until I retire in 2038. I figure a century is enough of this crap.
ReplyI’ll bet the issue is battery life.
Although the thought of Scoble all up in your shit is pretty bad too.
ReplyiPhone won’t record video until there’s an additional camera on the screen side. The grail is not to become yet another camcorder, but to be the 1st true videophone.
ReplyAdam, or perhaps both videophone and video. Although, videophone technology has been with us for 40 years, but never taken off. Most people answer the phone like Loren makes videos: in their underwear with their tits hanging out.
Maybe it will be the great media equalizer that our beautiful people celebrity perfection obsessed world needs.
Nah…
Replywow, the scoble email makes perfect sense. you gotta send that over to us.
ReplyArrington,
Yeah ill do that, break a trust with a close friend, so you can post our email. Yeah sure, keep checking that TC inbox.
ReplyCute! I fully agree with you about turning on the video. I was very frustrated yesterday by the announcement. I think DJ is right, though; Jobs is interested in the players, not the creators, of content. That sucks for you and me (and Scoble). But probably not for Jobs.
ReplyArrington, you’re such a hypocritical douche. You just finished ragging on me for posting my ex’s IMs to Valleywag - even when I did so under threat for my own self-protection.
ReplyLoren, these threaded comments are hard on the eyes, and a distraction.
Who has time to rate them, or even cares?
ReplyHere is your excuse to run around central park completely naked Loren… just don’t video it please
Qik Strikes Back: Supporting iPhone Next Week
ReplyI’ve been wondering why Qik wasn’t bragging about future iPhone support. Every since I first heard of them it seemed like they were missing a golden opportunity by only supporting Nokia. Let’s hope they’re ready for the flood of iPhone users.
ReplyThere’s currently a 3rd party jailbreakin app for the iPhone imaginatively called iPhoneVideoRecorder (http://www.iphonevideorecorder.com/ ) which seems to work ok.
I was pretty disgusted to not see a native video recording app in the new iPhone, but the SDK will make it easy for people to create and sell video recording apps (which Steve will take 30% of the proceeds) and make the developer some money.
So, that not such a bad thing. Better that, than stuck with whatever Apple throws on there, in a way.
No doubt the developer of the iPhoneVideoRecorder app is going to make a ton of cash when he gets to sell it through iTunes.
I hate these phones. But man, do I WANT ONE!
ReplyIf i didn’t hear specifically from Thomas Han that you met Jobs and that he was a big fan I would have dismissed the scoble email thing lol.
I have watched this video like 4x today - makes me laugh my ass off every time.
So well done!
