Poken is a cute little device. Apologies for the shitty camera work but this was an unexpected interview.

Did she say “it’s like a crystal bowel”… Wow. I’m bored.. bring Megs over and check out some art.
I’ll take 5 in ” Hot Pink ” !!!
Cool product, but I think the branding is way off. It looks like it is targeted towards younger children, but children grow up in isolated environments and have very small networks. In other words, they have no need for this device. I could see this being big among college students and professionals, but again, the branding is no good. The name and product design are way too cute to be taken seriously.
I saw these at London Twestival, yes they’re cute and cool and all that but the novelty wears off when you realise that outside the tech conference they’re being pitched at, few people actually own one. Of the people who do own one, the last thing they have in mind when meeting someone for the first time is ‘do you poken?’
Yes it’s a new product, yes it has potential, but it’s certainly not a business card killer. I think anon maybe right in saying that it could be big amongst College students, but beyond that it’s just another gimmick.
I dunno about all that. I mean, Mimobots are cute and “grown ups” love ‘em. Maybe Poken is just a cool idea that no one knows about–yet. And I’ betting that the 2gig version will be ever so much more useful. I wonder…when the 2gig model comes out, if Poken gave them to attendees of a conference like, say, SXSW, would that buzz be instantly created? Hmmmm
Btw…they are apparently only available on the firebox.com UK site. If your’re in the US, you can get them at http://www.gotpoken.com
Loren,
There you are..We go way back.. iT’s Uncle Tommy…Now send me a Free Subscription My Boy !!! We’ll smoke some Cubans have some of the Finest Scotch and talk about the Old Days in Harlem.. You Aunt Frita said ” Tell Loren I said ” Hi”!!! and Michelle is Such a ” Lucky Gal”.. Wink..wink..
It might be “gimmicky” but hidden in the cute is a very functional product that actually performs a service. I think it’s a bright idea. And here’s the thing…it’s for when you actually meet people. In person.
Reminds me of when I used to infrared beam my Palm Pilot VCard to, well…nobody in particular.
Side subject: Love the Poken gal and the accent.
I think its a great idea but they need a corporate version. the other ones look to much like toys for business people to carry around.
@Aryeh:Corporate Poken? There’s a thought! Watch this space….
We’ve already got a conference pass version out http://www.flickr.com/photos/aymanvanbregt/3316224882/

“High Four!”
Even if it gets critical mass (miracle of God that), it will be a Tamagotchied fad. Rule of thumb, when these devices get promo’ed at Techy/Arty Conferences, they always die. People don’t want another device to fiddle with. Smart Phones killed the PDA, and Poken has no where to go. College blip the best can hope for.
Why does she put on that awful american accent. Nervous disposition perhaps?
I don’t think this is a scalable business and where is the growth potential? This will be a fad that will fall sharply.

@Anon:
Awful american accent? All wrong! The accent has very little to do with a nervous disposition. That’s for sure. Name and product too cute to be taken seriously?
I say: enjoy it.
Interesting concept… Can’t see it replacing business cards in the real world though… And what is with the characters?
Certainly room for improvement: but don’t give up.
Young girl to be running an operation too: give me her headhunter’s number- he’s done a mammoth sales job in that!
