Loren, I love your POV even if I dont always agree with what you see. Its nice to see someone take the role of the unabashed bastard and go toe to toe with guys like Cuban. I think HD is awesome and that is does have a future - alongside content from other sources like YouTube - I think they fit different niches that appeal to different people.
Keep it up and right on with your bash on Wayne Porter - dude is a friend - but he overstepped on the BlogTag issue.
Take Care,
Wade

Loren is 100% right. Despite the pleas and implicit condescension of Mark Cuban, people like what they like and all the ranting and raving in the world isn’t going to change that.
You think I like watching garbage on TV every night? Of course not, but I have accepted its popularity, have learned to tolerate it and have found alternative methods of entertainment.
At least the Mavs are in first place so it ain’t all bad Mark.

On the other hand, sports is selling a lot of HDTVs.
Content over quality, but it’s got its place.
I can’t argue with you on the point of porn, because when I was living with boys in college the first time, dvd porn came out, and it was all about alternate angles and removing the audio tracks…

Nice videopost, Lauren. I watch free broadcast TV via antenna and fuzzy youtube videos via the internet. The best thing on youtube is all the free music videos. Do you think people really care all that much about sound quality though? I figure it’s the same as with the picture (content trumps clarity).
By Steve on Dec 27, 2006
Why cant you have content with quality?
I have 0 interest in lounging around on a brain dead Saturday on the living room couch and watching YouTubeish videos on TV. Likewise, there’s nothing appealing about watching an hour of Grey’s Anatomy (or whatever) on the monitor at my desk.
The winner in this new media conglomeration of TV and Internet will be the studio / producer who develops the product that satisfies and exceeds the needs and expectations of both media experiences.

And your computer has to be on your desk why? Laptops on trains, in airports, on the sofa, wherever, really.
There’s also all these kids around who didn’t have a TV in college, and downloaded episodes of everything they wanted to watch instead. Been going on for years. I mean, sure, I like watching CSI in HD, but if you miss an episode, may as well download the thing to catch up.

Candice is 100 percent correct, and Steve sound is everything.

When I first heard about this goofy fad in Japan called karaoke, I thought, “That’ll never go over in the states, our culture is too different–Americans will never put up with a bunch of drunks trying to grab their 15 minutes of fame (or a 5 minute facsimile of it, anyway).”
I agree with Loren. YouTube is web karaoke (among other things), so to speak, and TV connectivity will only make that “dreck” more popular.
The consumer pool most interested in HD is the 17-45 years-old males who watch porn and sports.
Cuban knows that, and he’s not very convincing with all the bluster.
YouTube still represents a massive long tail of content.
By Vince Williams on Dec 27, 2006
Holy crap Vince, who knew how sharp you were. The long tail aspect I didnt even touch on and is SO important

Glad to contribute.

YouTube is way more entertaining than tv no matter how good the quality of the tv picture. HDTV is just another way to sell us more expensive televisions. And user generated content is way more entertaining than the crap that tv serves up, well some of it. Yes sound is important because that’s where the message lies. So how do I just listen to you and not have to look at your ugly mug Loren? Now Xu Yue, well that’s a totally different story.
By David Temple on Dec 27, 2006
David,
Yue goes into full scale production in the New Year, you should contact me directly for more details.

Vince et al — High-five from a distance on the Long Tail point. The base level of the Long Tail is infinite choice. And from the user-producer perspective, it creates infinite online outlets, online networks, & online audiences even beyond YouTube’s immense community. This endlessness will make HD a bonus but far less of a relevant factor to the content hungry. This broaches a ramble but I’m reading the book and can’t get enough.
By Jill Foster on Dec 28, 2006
Jill, please broach a ramble anytime you feel like it.

I like only Seinfeld, Cheaters, King of Queens, Beauty and the Geek, Dateline. Can’t think of anything else on the boob tube that is good.
TV is so 1950, no matter how clear it is. Clarity and garbage programming?
Only half-males watch sports. Real men play it or leave it alone.

I have an HD DVD player, and I will probably end up buying some porn for it in HD, but I have never purchased a DVD for porn either, so not sure… I watch it online, so you can believe that I have invested some $$$ into the WMVHD format.
Either way, HD Porn is the best.
By HD Porn on Aug 4, 2007
HD is the best invention so far this decade. I have a hard time watching ANYTHING in standard resolution, I can’t even watch any of my old DVDs.
By Rated HD on Aug 4, 2007
Not that there is anything wrong with that ; )
