Loren,
I’ve never understood all the Gates bashers. This guy did one of the most amazing things in history. He made the PC ubiquitous.
His successes have changed my life in ways I can’t thank him enough for.
ReplyHis successes came on the trampled corpses of a lot of smaller companies whose innovations he borrowed. He was a stubborn prick, a ruthless guy, and single-handedly presided over the most stagnant period in computer software as he shoveled version after version of Office and Windows onto an industry that was locked into anti-competitive agreements to sell his crap.
As a charitable person, he’s unmatched. As a business man, you’d be hardpressed to find a bigger asshole.
Legendary? No doubt.

ReplyYes, totally. Big balls, mine de rien. That’s always impressive.
ReplyHe was voracious, unrelenting, always totally on message - he eclipses JP Morgan, Carnegie, all other tycoon / philanthropists and he’s still got a long way to go. A lot of credit goes to his wife - his life changed, became larger, more focused after her. They really are a duo now.
ReplyYeah, he eclipses JP Morgan, Carnegie, and all other tycoon/philanthropists in mendacity and untrammeled greed– the triumph of the nebbish.
You can’t buy your way into rock ‘n’ roll heaven, and anyone who spends $50 million on a house is a gluttonous fool.

I think the crux of the Bill Gates bashers’ argument is this: All Gates did was take everything from an infrastructure that Steve Jobs built from Xerox and realize he could make a ton of money by selling it to IBM.
Watch the film Pirates of Silicon Valley or read the book Fire in the Valley: The Making of The Personal Computer.
Reply“Just went out and did it”
Fascinating analysis. You’re really adding a lot to the conversation.

ReplyYou know, it takes big balls to admit it about Gates’ big balls.
ReplyBill Gates is really an Idol… the problem is thinking on who is going to drive Microsoft… will be good to keep the giant standing?
