Alright, I watched her show today. I didn’t think it was that bad. As subject matter goes, it was a little goofy. Javascript — what about Javascript? Was I distracted somehow? I’m not sure.
But really, you can’t go wrong with Steely Dan and boobs. I think the shirt could have been a little tighter, but it worked OK for me.
The real trouble with the show wasn’t the delivery (wasn’t bad) or the goofy turns (silly but ok, and she wasn’t hired to like a regular newscaster), it was the writing. It was all kind of disjointed. There was the bit about Tori Spelling, then it was over before I really knew what point she was trying to make.
I know you like to pick on Amanda because she shows off her body, and I like watching her for the same reason, but I agree with you on one point: this show’s got to improve if it’s going to make it. Subject matter, writing.
But hey, it’s her first day. Maybe it’ll improve. And you have to admit, she did land herself a pretty good gig if she can keep it.

she landed a great gig for sure, but come one you said it.
ReplyHey everybody’s got their off days, and she’s kind of in uncharted territory with this. Yes, lots of people have video blogs. But she’s trying to connect with a mainstream audience coming at it from a kind of geeky Internet perspective — that’s tough. Will normal people want to watch this?
It’ll be interesting to see what happens. I hope she can do it, there is huge potential there if they can get the right material for the show.

You hit the nail right on the head. I really don’t see a big following of geeks over to the MSM but it doesn’t surprise me considering ABC’s history. These are the same geniuses that put Dennis Miller on Monday Night Football and we all saw how poorly that abomination turned out. Either Amanda changes the subject matter of her videos or she’s gone fast.
ReplyLooked at the first 2 minutes because you blogged about it - and I was amazed to see that she was able to come across as an even bigger egomaniac than ever before. Didn’t know it was possible. I’m flabbergasted.

Agreed.
Beware of the deflating boobies…
ReplyWow! This guy certainly felt strongly about her:

ReplyI was wondering when my brooklyn boy 1938 would get on this… you can see my post about this horsecrap here:

I think it is degrading to women and and really bad.
ReplyYep some strong opinions on this alright. I still think the boob issue, while controversial, is a wildcard: it will alienate some people (women mostly), draw some others (dirty old men, teenage boys), and not matter to the rest.
I still think it will come down to the content and the writing, and the show is undeniably weak there.
Reply[...] Weird blog coincidence alert! Also, after publishing I checked my RSS reader and saw a post from Loren at 1938 Media calling Amanda’s debut videoblog “horrible” (what, not a “horror show” Loren? Tell us what you really think). He also made reference to Suzanne Somers. I didn’t examine timestamps to who used that comparison first (probably him) but when I saw the reference I wanted to add an update with a link to his post.
