Good POV. I agree that the medium will be around for a while, and if you read blogs by many of the big names, the always seem to refer back to standard pen and paper. It’s the physical aspect that seems so familiar and inviting, compared to digital this and that.
But what about speed? I know newspapers provide news at the tip of your fingers, but it’s yesterdays news. I think this is something we need to consider to reshape the print industry. Forget the whole e-paper/e-ink garbage Xerox has been blabbering about for years. Something new needs to surface meshing the conventional newspaper with the speed of news on the internet.
My brother-in-law is the managing editor for a southeast Texas newspaper. When I asked him about ‘media 2.0′ his response was that there are still a great number of regular folk out there who still love the experience of just holding a paper. There’s an interaction there that just cant be replaced by staring at a computer monitor. I agree with him 100%.
Buying newspaper to the old man in the corner of 6th Ave. and 23rd St. is my personal social arm. It is not about the newspaper anymore for me. It is about giving the dollar to him everyday that makes me happy.
Newspapers are still necessary because they are (in nearly all cases) the front-line producers of the news that everyone else quotes. The same people who are saying newspapers are dead would find themselves with absolutely nothing to talk about if they went away.
This much is a fact though: newspapers are in trouble. Their sales keep dropping. Unlike some people I don’t really view that as a positive thing though. Some folks think they deserve it because of sloppy and/or partisan reporting. Maybe. But lower sales will make those problems worse, not better.
I hope they can figure it out. I think we’ll see lots of papers fold (sorry) in the next few years though.
The boy’s and girl’s name Loren \l(o)-ren\ is pronounced LOR-en. It is of English origin. Modern variant of Lorenzo and Lawrence. Might be confused with the girl’s name Lauren
I use it for my worms. Composting worms love newspaper. Sometimes I even read it first, but the Dallas Morning News is usually pretty light on any actual news.

ReplyYes, the concept of the newspaper is very instant, but the content is far from instant.
And a simple camera light (upon your face) will make a world of a difference.
ReplyAt the end there I thought you were going to zoom back and we’d see you sitting on the toilet as you were reading the paper.

ReplyAll excellent points. There is a primitive connection to newspapers. All you guys are right.

ReplyI love to read the paper in the morning with a joint and a cup of coffee.
When I’m done, I fold the paper up and fan all the smoke out the front door (I have a very small house– we call it the ’sweat shack’).
I can’t do that with my computer.
ReplyThis fan could probably get the smoke out.

It’s the size of a small laptop. Just remember to be ecologically friendly with the roach.
ReplyThanks, Compost King.
The fan is very nice, and I think it’d do the job, but it’s more fun to pretend I’m Hunter S. Thompson.
Roaches are bio-degradable, you know.;-)
