I Lied To Vaspers The Grate

July 25, 2006 – 1:59 am

I was talking with Vaspers and he asked why I don’t write more. I said because I was a shitty writer.

I lied.

I don’t write more often because I think it is too easy to censor yourself. I’m not interested in doing that. Writing gives you too much time to think. About everything. Most people don’t talk the way they write. There are pauses when you type. Time to reflect, write something witty, use a really cool analogy. It’s not real.

I use video because it is the purest form of communication you can have on the web.

I just wrote that and it sounds crazy, but if you looked into my eyes, and I did my best Alec Baldwin voice as I said it you’d believe me.

  2. That’s fair, but writing does have some advantages. For instance, it’s a lot more searchable than video, which is the thing I find most helpful on my site (truth is I use my search bar far often than anyone else). I try to write from the cuff, I don’t really edit something before I post it, I mostly use writing as a way to explore ideas, rather than to explicitly communicate them.

  3. Good point, not everything has to be about communicating.

  4. Yet the subconscious itself is structured like language and the mere fact of presenting visual and audio, or plain textual, information, axiomatically means:

    you’re communicating something.

Even in our comedy videos, we are saying something about life, our world, the digital effluvium.

Try Googling “CEO video blogs”. My post shows up at #4 in the results list. And I just start vlogging a week ago!

Hence, we need 1938 Media and Loren Feldman to carve this pumpkin for us, so we can light it up with our glee and expertise.

  5. P.S. Loren, I agree with the webcam being superior to the keyboard. Video humanizes a web site or blog, more than text, audio, and photos all put together.

Yet, though Apollo should shine with all his most dazzling poetic photons into our eyelets, we ought to vary our blogs with plain text posts, video posts, podcast bursts, digital art, photos of handwritten posts, etc. to spice things up, but simmer down there you motley New Yorkers, I envy you.

  6. What did you eat for linguistic lunch today?

Pete Veilstorm, my imaginary but indispensable copilot, says: “Writing, as Derrida declared is superior to speech, but video is superior to plain audio or photos or text. Thus, vlogs are higher in value and purposeability than blogs.”

  11. Reminds me of “that scene” from Naked Lunch.

The thing you have to remember is.. even when you self censor, is it really free will that censors? Another words the distinction between the censor and the censored is a fiction. The scope of the fictions truth is identity.

I say this in the Nietzschian that when we say we will something, what we are really doing is identifying our self with the dominant will… that is we are made up of an ecology of wills.. we are like a free market systems driving the ecologies evolution.

or that’s my random thought of the day.
